For the last number of years Maurice has been working as a full-time fire, explosion and forensic engineering investigator. He has investigated a wide variety of fires and explosions in residential, commercial, marine, healthcare, educational and industrial environments. Maurice has been responsible for the forensic investigations of numerous incidents involving mechanical failures and the escapes of liquids and gases from pipework and fittings. He has also investigated fires of electrical origin and has written articles on engineering failures and fire causation. Maurice has given evidence in the high court as an expert witness, and has worked throughout the UK, Ireland and abroad.

Maurice holds a BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering and an MSc in Fire Investigation. He is a Chartered Engineer and is registered with the Engineering Council in the UK. He has been a Registered Gas Installer in Ireland (RGII) and is a member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers and the Institute of Engineers of Ireland.

Before becoming a forensic investigator, Maurice worked as a mechanical services design engineer and owned a mechanical services contracting company. He gained extensive experience with the design and installation of mechanical building services, including pipework distribution systems, flue systems and ventilation systems. His work also included oil and gas distribution networks, solid fuel and boiler installations and the design of both wet and dry fire suppression systems for buildings.

Maurice completed a plumbing/pipe fitting apprenticeship in 1992. He worked as a qualified plumber/pipe fitter where he gained extensive practical experience installing heating and plumbing systems, drainage systems, pipework distribution systems and boiler installations.

Maurice has worked with most types of pipework and methods of joining pipework, including stainless steel, copper, galvanised, mild steel, cast iron, plastic and brass. For a number of years Maurice gained hands-on practical experience with different types of soldering and welding, including oxy acetylene, TIG (tungsten inert gas) and electric arc. He also has experience of grinding (abrasive cutting) and other types and methods of hot work.
